Soglio

The village is extended on a natural terrace of the mountain, which dominates the valley floor. Numerous buildings rise up from the tangle of houses. Almost anticipates the agglomeration the evangelical church, which today preserves the baroque character assured by the 18th century reconstruction.
The arrival in Soglio is a dream come true. Are the ancient palaces, houses and stables of the past centuries? Or the panorama at the bottom of the Bondasca Valley, with its pointed peaks of over three thousand metres, most of them covered with snow? Are the chestnut trees and fruit trees at almost 1100 metres or the well-kept gardens? Perhaps it is the harsh contrasts between the view of the mountains, with their high peaks, and the safety of a gentle landscape? The old mountain village of Soglio has many aspects. In the core are the palaces of the von Salis family. The oldest dates back to the 14th century and today houses the B&B Pension Piazza. The "youngest" date back to the 17th-18th centuries, including Casa Mezzo (1696) and Casa Battista (1701), which has been a hotel since 1876 and still pampers guests with the name Palazzo Salis. Many other houses and stables cling to Soglio like a bird's nest. At the same time Soglio is spoiled by the sun creating an unusual flora, well protected from the fresh breezes by the old walls. Just below the village there are many chestnut woods with countless chestnut trees that the Romans brought and cultivated in Bergell. Soglio is climatically on a threshold (and perhaps also on the "threshold to paradise", as the painter Giovanni Segantini once said). The arrival in Soglio on foot is particularly beautiful: here ends the Panoramic Path, which descends from Casaccia to Soglio on the southern slopes. Impressive paths lead from Soglio to its fallow land such as Däir (to the west) or Tombal, Plän Vest and Cadrin (to the north-east). From here the crossing of the Pass da la Duana to the Avers valley begins. Or you can descend comfortably to Castasegna, the last village before the Italian border.
