Hospental

Hospental lies directly at the foot of the Gotthard Pass, at 1493 m.a.s.l., in the middle of the Ursern Valley. The village is a good starting point for, among other things, pass rides in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The municipality consists of the village of the same name and the former Walser settlement of Zumdorf (today officially the smallest village in Switzerland).
The last village before heading south over the Gotthard enjoyed great attention during the mule-train era. The name itself, Hospental, comes from the Latin "hospitale" for inn. Duties were levied and the locals braved storms and survived war campaigns that went north over the Gotthard. Like in 1799, for example, when the Russian general Suworow took on Napoleon's troops. The village centre of Hospental is well worth a visit, as the houses still date from the prosperous times and create a harmonious village image. The fortified tower, which dates back to the 13th century, is also characteristic of the landscape. Zumdorf also belongs to the municipality of Hospental. It is not only the smallest village in the Andermatt holiday region, but in the whole of Switzerland. Only four people live in Zumdorf all year round. Hospental itself has 190 inhabitants.
